1.1 How do I search on nkoda?
Go to the ‘Search’ section, Select either the ‘Find’ or ‘Explore’ tab at the top of the screen. In the ‘Find’ tab, you can search for a specific title and/or artist. In the ‘Explore’ tab, you can search by any keyword.
1.2 Why can’t I find what I’m looking for?
We’re constantly adding content and new publishers to the app. So, if it’s not there today, it might be soon!

2. Managing your profile
2.1 How do I change my profile name?
Go into the ‘My Library’ section of the app,
Select the three horizontal dots in the top right corner and then select 'Edit profile'
Enter your new profile name.
To save these settings, select the save option in your profile section.
2.2 How do I change my profile picture?
Go into the ‘My Library’ section of the app,
Select the three horizontal dots in the top right corner and then select 'Edit profile'
Select the 'Camera' icon
Choose a photo from your device.
To save these settings, select the save option in your profile section.
2.3 How do I change my instrument choices?
To help us make nkoda personal to you, simply select the ‘Personalise’ button on the Discover page. You can then select as many instruments and genres as you want, as well as your ability. Once you’re done, you’ll be able to see our specially curated playlists on your Discover page!
When you select ‘Personalise’, a selection menu will pop up so you can:
Choose your instrument,
Then select your ability,
How you play, and what genres you play.
Select ‘Add instrument’,
To save these settings, Select ‘I’m done’,
3. Score view
3.1 How do I open a score?
Choose the piece you want to study or play. To open your part, select the image to the left of the instrument name. You’ll be presented with an overview of the score (Navigation view). From here, you can scroll through the whole piece and select the page you want to open.
When you open the same part a second time, you will be taken to the first page of music.
3.2 How do I get into the score from Navigation view?
From the Navigation view, Select the page you want to open. To return to Navigation view, Select the middle right of your screen.
On tablets and phones, you can also use the pinch gesture (moving two fingers together) to move to Navigation view.
3.3 How do I exit a score?
Select the back option on the top left-hand side of the navigation bar - this can be accessed either by tapping/clicking the middle of the screen in Score view, or at the top of the screen in Navigation view.
3.4 How do I turn pages?
On tablets and phones:
- Tap the top/bottom right corner to go to the next page
- Tap the top/bottom left corner to go to the previous page
- Swipe left to go to the next page
- Swipe right to go to the previous page
- In portrait mode, you can also swipe up to go to the next page
- In portrait mode, you can also swipe down to go to the previous page
- In annotation mode, tap the Up blue arrow to go the previous page
- In annotation mode, tap the Down blue arrow to go the next page
For hands-free page turning, connect a Bluetooth pedal.
On desktops:
- Click on the top/bottom right corner to go to the next page
- Click on the top/bottom left corner to go to the previous page
- Select the down/right Arrow Key to go to the next page
- Select the up/left Arrow keyboard key to go to the previous page
- 2-finger swipe left on trackpad to go to the next page
- 2-finger swipe right on trackpad to go to the previous page
- In annotation mode, click the Up blue arrow
- In annotation mode, click the up/left Arrow keyboard key to go the previous page
- In annotation mode, click the Down blue arrow
- In annotation mode, click the down/right Arrow keyboard key to go the next page

3.5 How do I zoom in/out on a score?
On tablets and phones:
- To zoom in - use two fingers on the screen and move them away from each other (a reverse pinching motion)
- To zoom out - use two fingers on the screen and move them towards each other (in a pinching motion)
On desktops:
To zoom in:
- Laptop trackpad - Use two fingers on the trackpad and move them away from each other (a reverse pinching motion).
- Laptop trackpad (Mac) - Hold the command [Cmd] while scrolling with two fingers on trackpad
- Laptop trackpad (Windows) - Hold the command [Ctrl] while scrolling with two fingers on trackpad
- Mouse (Mac) - Hold the control key [Cmd] while turning the mouse wheel.
- Mouse (Windows) - Hold the control key [Ctrl] while turning the mouse wheel.
- Keyboard only (Windows) - Hold the control key [Ctrl] while pressing the plus [+] key
- Keyboard only (Mac) - Hold the command [Cmd] while pressing the plus [+] key

3.6 How do I pan on a score?
On tablets and phones:
When zoomed in,
- use a 1-finger or a 2-finger drag to pan through the score
- In annotation mode, use a 2-finger drag to pan through the score
On desktops:
When zoomed in,
- Mouse - Click, hold and drag the cursor to the desired direction
- Laptop trackpad - Click, hold and 1-finger drag to the desired direction
- In annotation mode, Trackpad (Windows), Hold the control key [Ctrl] while clicking & holding and perform a one finger drag to the desired direction
- In annotation mode, Mouse (Windows), Hold the control key [Ctrl] while clicking & holding and drag the cursor to the desired direction.
- In annotation mode, Trackpad (Mac), Hold the command key [Cmd] while clicking & holding and perform a one finger drag to the desired direction.
- In annotation mode, Mouse (Mac), Hold the command key [Cmd] while clicking & holding and drag the cursor to the desired direction.
3.7 How do I change the page layout of my score?
From the top navigation bar (this can be accessed either by tapping/clicking the middle of the screen in Score view, or at the top of the screen in Navigation view) select the Page layout icon. From the menu displayed choose between 4 different viewing modes
- Fit to screen: Ensuring the score pages will always fit to your screen no matter your orientation or app size.
- Fit to width: Maximising your score view, Ensuring the score pages will always fit to the width of your device while using it in landscape orientations/sizes.
- 2 pages: - Ensuring the score will display 2 pages at a time while using your device in landscape orientations/sizes.
- 4 pages: - Ensuring the score will display 4 pages at a time while using your device in landscape orientations/sizes.
4. Your library
4.1 How do I add titles to my library?
You can add titles to your library in two ways:
- From our ‘Search’ function, find the piece you’re looking for, select the three horizontal dots and then select ‘Save to library’.
- From the piece of music - you can decide whether to add the whole title or individual parts to your library.

- To add the whole title, select the three horizontal dots in the top right-hand corner and select ‘Save to library’.
- To add an individual part, simply select the three horizontal dots to the right of the instrument and select ‘Save to library’.
4.2 How do I add to playlists and create a new playlist?
You can add titles to a playlist in two ways:
- From the ‘Search’ - find the piece of music you’re looking for, select the three horizontal dots and select ‘Add to playlist’. Then choose the playlist you want to add to.
To create a new playlist, select ‘New playlist’. Enter the playlist name, set it as public or private, choose its category, then select ‘Create playlist’. - From the piece - you can decide whether to add the whole title or individual parts to your playlist. To add the whole title, select the three horizontal dots in the top right-hand corner and select ‘Add to playlist’. To add an individual part, simply select the three horizontal dots to the right of the instrument and select ‘Add to playlist’.

4.3 How do I remove titles from my library or playlist?
Library
In the ‘My Library’ section, go to your ‘Library’,
Select ‘View all pieces of music’,
Then select the tick next to the piece(s) you want to remove.
Playlist
Go into your playlist,
Select ‘Edit’ or pencil icon in the top right corner,
Select the circle to the left of the piece you want to remove,
Then select the bin icon on the right-hand side of the screen,
Select tick in the top right corner to save and exit.
4.4 How do I share titles and playlists?
Enter the title or playlist, then select the three horizontal dots on the top right-hand side of the screen. Select ‘Share’ and choose your sharing method.
Alternatively, you can share titles directly from the list in your library by selecting the three horizontal dots to the right of the screen.
4.5 Can I share individual parts?
Of course! Select the three horizontal dots to the right-hand side of the part and then select ‘Share’ to choose a sharing method.
4.6 Can others see my library?
Not at the moment. We’ll have social features coming in future releases. We promise you’ll always be in control of who can see your profile.
5. Uploading music
5.1 What file types can I upload?
Only PDF files at the moment, but we’re looking to expand this in the future.
5.2 Can I share my uploads?
Yes, you can share your uploads with any of your friends who are using nkoda. To do this, select the three horizontal dots to the right-hand side of an uploaded item, and then select ‘Share’.
5.3 What’s the largest file size I’m allowed to upload?
Currently, the maximum limit for a PDF upload is 150MB.
5.4 How many files can I upload? Can I upload multiple files at once?
There’s no limit on the number of PDFs you can upload. Files can be uploaded in batches of up to 20 at once.
5.5 How long will it take to upload?
When you upload your file, it can be used immediately. The app converts the file from PDF to our own file format so that it is safer, faster to upload, and to let you use all our marking tools.
6. Markings
6.1 What mark-up tools are there?
The following tools can be found in the toolbar on the left side of your screen in Score view.
- Musical symbols - Add predesigned symbols, such as dynamics and articulation. Select a symbol, close the window and drop the symbol with precision anywhere on your music.
- Scalable symbols - Add symbols that can be scaled to your needs such as slurs, staves and hairpins. Once you've selected your symbol, place it on the score and drag to resize.
- Free draw - Draw, write and circle anything you want on a score.
- Highlight - Highlight sections in scores.
- Erase - Erase markings, text and highlights - any annotations that you've made.
- Text - Write notes on the score. When the text box opens, type away. You can also change the size and colour of the text, and move, extend or delete the text box.
- Move - Move any markings around the page by selecting and dragging them.
- Lasso - Modify a range of markings you've created by drawing a loop around them. Remember to check which layer of markings is active! To move, drag the selected markings anywhere on the page. To resize and rotate, use a pinching motion on your touchscreen or trackpad, or scroll the mouse wheel while pressing 'Command' on Apple devices and 'Control' on Windows devices. To delete, select the bin icon attached to the selection.
- Change colour - Change the colour of the annotations you're making.
- Pen thickness - Highlighter too thin? Drawings too thick? Adjust the width of your digital nib.
- Undo - Erase the most recent annotations.
- Redo - Bring back markings that you've deleted.
- Add layer - Layer notes and markings so that you can focus on certain annotations and hide those that you don’t want to see.
6.2 How do I access and exit mark-up tools?
In Score view, select the dark blue bar on the left side of the screen to open the toolbar, then select your mark-up tools.
You can continue turning pages while annotating by using the up and down arrows on the bottom right of the page.
To close the toolbar, select the ‘X’ at the top of the toolbar.
6.3 How do I add bookmarks, repeats, and hide pages?
To add bookmarks, repeats or to hide pages, you will need to be in Navigation view.
You can access this by tapping/clicking the middle-right side of the score that you have opened.
In Navigation view, you’ll find a set of icons to the left:
- Four coloured bookmarks
- Start and end repeat marks
- Hide pages
- Layers
Go to the page you want to bookmark, hide or add repeat marks to, then tap on the corresponding icon. To undo the action, tap the icon again.
6.4 If I share my markings, will those people have them forever?
Yes. Any markings you share with someone will be a copy of your original, so they’ll have it until they delete it from their library. Any changes they make will not be visible to you unless they share the changes back.
7. Storing music for offline use
7.1 How do I store music for offline use?
You can store individual parts offline in several ways - they will all appear in the ‘Offline’ area of the ‘You’ section:
- From inside a score - when you have a score open, there is a cloud icon in the navigation bar at the top right-hand side of the screen. Select this icon and it’ll store the part offline.
- From a title - before you open a part, you can select the three horizontal dots to the right and select ‘Store offline’.
- Last 3 Parts that are already opened in your device - these can also be stored offline permanently in the 'Offline' section by selecting the three horizontal dots to the right and selecting ‘Store offline’.
7.2 How do I remove a score from my ‘Downloaded items’?
Select the three horizontal dots to the right of the title (in your Offline items), and then select ‘Delete’.
7.3 What’s the maximum amount of music I can store for offline use?
nkoda does not set a limit on the app, but because of how it is stored it depends on how much available space you have left on your device.
7.4 Where is my offline music stored?
On your device, within the nkoda app. It’s encrypted data, which means it’s not available outside of the nkoda app. We do this to protect the music!
7.5 If I open nkoda on another device, will I have access to my offline music?
No, sorry - not unless you store your music offline on the additional device. We don’t sync offline music between devices just yet.
Also, please note that if you delete the app on one of your devices, anything you’ve stored offline will also be deleted from that device.
