Michael Maybrick, born on 31st January 1841 in Liverpool, was an English composer and singer. He was a prolific writer of songs and achieved significant success under his pseudonym Stephen Adams. His most famous work, 'The Holy City', became one of the most popular religious songs in English. Maybrick was also a well-rounded individual, being a skilled cricketer, yachtsman, and cyclist, as well as a captain in the Artists Rifles. Later in life, he served as chairman of the Isle of Wight Hospital, a magistrate, and was elected mayor of Ryde five times. He passed away in his sleep of heart failure on 26 August 1913.
