Roger Cuthbert Quilter (1 November 1877 – 21 September 1953) was a British composer renowned for his art songs, often setting Shakespearean text. Born in Hove, Sussex, he studied at Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt, joining the Frankfurt Group of composers. Quilter was influential through his songs and light music, including 'Children's Overture'. His collaboration with tenor Gervase Elwes was notable until Elwes's death in 1921. Quilter faced challenges being a gay man in the late 19th century and struggled with mental health, particularly after his nephew's death during WWII. He passed away in London.
