Sir Peter Maxwell Davies CH CBE was an English composer and conductor, appointed Master of the Queen's Music in 2004. Born in Salford, Lancashire, he showed early musical promise, later studying at the University of Manchester and the Royal Manchester College of Music. Davies was known for his contemporary music group, New Music Manchester, and his array of compositions, including eight works for stage and ten symphonies. As a conductor, he held roles with the Royal Philharmonic and BBC Philharmonic orchestras and was a prolific composer varying in styles throughout his career. He was made a CBE in 1981, knighted in 1987, and was a Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour. Davies passed away in 2016【25†source】.
