Péter Eötvös is a prominent Hungarian composer, conductor, and teacher, born on 2 January 1944 in Székelyudvarhely, Transylvania, which was then part of Hungary and now is Romania. He has a broad musical background, having studied composition in Budapest and Cologne. Eötvös frequently collaborated with the Stockhausen Ensemble from 1968 to 1976 and was a founding member of the influential Oeldorf Group in the early 1970s. His leadership role as the musical director and conductor of the Ensemble InterContemporain spanned from 1979 to 1991, and he also served as the principal guest conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra from 1985 to 1988.
