Julius Klengel was a renowned German cellist, known for his études and solo pieces for the instrument. Born on 24 September 1859 in Leipzig, he joined the Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig at fifteen and became famous throughout Europe. Klengel was also a prolific composer, with a vast output that included four cello concertos, two double cello concertos, cello quartets, a cello sonata, and numerous caprices, etudes, and other technical pieces. His two volumes of cello etudes remain part of the core repertory. He passed away on 27 October 1933 in his hometown of Leipzig.
