Julia Wolfe (born December 18, 1958) is an American composer and professor of music at New York University. Known for music that combines classical forms with the energy of rock, her piece Anthracite Fields won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2015. Wolfe began her music studies seriously at the University of Michigan, receiving a BA in 1982, and went on to Yale. With Michael Gordon and David Lang, Wolfe founded Bang on a Can, a new music collective. Her awards include the Herb Alpert Award (2015), and she was named a MacArthur Fellow (2016). She lives in lower Manhattan with her husband and children.
