John Herndon Mercer, born on November 18, 1909, in Savannah, Georgia, was a prominent American lyricist, songwriter, and singer. He co-founded Capitol Records and became known for his Tin Pan Alley contributions. Mercer's songs, including classics like 'Moon River' and 'Autumn Leaves', were tremendously successful. With his lyrical prowess, he earned nineteen Oscar nominations and won four. Despite his lack of formal musical training, Mercer's exposure to a variety of musical influences shaped his songwriting from an early age. He passed away on June 25, 1976, in Los Angeles, leaving a lasting impact on music.
