John McCabe CBE, born on 21 April 1939 in Huyton, Liverpool, emerged as one of Britain's most prominent composers and pianists. Overcoming physical challenges due to an accident in his childhood, McCabe thrived in a musical environment, inspired by his violinist mother and a home filled with music. He composed thirteen symphonies by age eleven, later discarding them due to his self-imposed high standards. McCabe served as the director of the London College of Music between 1983 and 1990, and his legacy in British music was bolstered by his acclaimed compositions for symphonies, ballets, and piano. Esteemed for his formidable pianistic talents and extensive compositional range, he passed away after battling cancer on 13 February 2015.
