English composer John Linton Gardner CBE, born 2 March 1917 in Manchester, England and raised in Ilfracombe, North Devon, was influenced early on by his family's musical background. His physician father, Alfred Linton Gardner, was also an amateur composer. Gardner studied at Exeter College, Oxford as the Hubert Parry organ scholar, and his early work was recognized and published by Hubert J. Foss of Oxford University Press. During World War II, he served with Transport Command and began formulating his Symphony No.1. Post-war, he held various roles, including a repetiteur at the Royal Opera House and teaching at the Royal Academy of Music. His compositions span orchestral, choral, chamber, and organ works, notable for choir pieces and carols like 'Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day'. He passed away on 12 December 2011 in Liss Forest, England.
