John Dowland (c. 1563 – buried 20 February 1626) was an English Renaissance composer, lutenist, and singer. He is best known for melancholic songs such as 'Come, heavy sleep', 'Come again', and 'Flow my tears'. Dowland's music has been influential, especially for lutenists and classical guitarists. His early life is somewhat obscure, though it is believed he was born in London. His dedication to 'my loving countryman Mr. John Forster the younger, merchant of Dublin in Ireland' suggests connections to Dublin. Dowland served at the court of Christian IV of Denmark and was eventually appointed a lutenist for James I of England. His compositions display the melancholy rare in music of his time, with works like 'Lachrimae' becoming well-known. Dowland died in 1626 and was buried at St Ann's, Blackfriars, London.
