More about Gustav Holst
Gustav Theodore Holst, known for his orchestral suite The Planets, was an English composer, arranger, and teacher. Born on 21 September 1874 in Cheltenham, he became an influential figure in the development of British music. His compositional style evolved through the influence of Wagner, Strauss, English folksongs, and modern composers like Ravel. Although he wanted to be a pianist, a condition called neuritis in his right arm led him to focus on composing, teaching, and playing the trombone professionally. Holst taught at the Royal College of Music and was deeply involved in music education, founding the Whitsun music festivals.
