Gary Lightbody, born Gareth John Lightbody, is a Northern Irish musician recognized primarily as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist for the alternative rock band Snow Patrol. Born on 15 June 1976 in Bangor, County Down, Northern Ireland, he founded the musical supergroups The Reindeer Section and Tired Pony. His early life included a passion for poetry, inspired by Seamus Heaney, and an academic stint in Scotland studying English literature at the University of Dundee. Known for his baritone vocal range, Lightbody's musicianship is self-taught, as he cannot read music and prefers to intuit his way through chords. His attachment to music and his roots in Northern Ireland remain deeply influential in his work.
