More about Charles Tournemire
Charles Arnould Tournemire (1870-1939) was a French composer and organist renowned for his improvisation skills, particularly influenced by Gregorian chant. His works encompass symphonies, operas, chamber pieces, and piano solos, with particular acclaim for his organ compositions like L'Orgue mystique. A disciple of César Franck, Tournemire succeeded Gabriel Pierné as organist at the Basilique Ste-Clotilde in Paris, where he remained from 1898 until his death. He also taught chamber music at the Paris Conservatoire and authored a biography of Franck. His significant recordings and posthumous transcriptions by Maurice Duruflé remain a testament to his artistry.
