More about Cecil Armstrong Gibbs
Cecil Armstrong Gibbs (1889-1960) was a versatile English composer, best known for his choral music and songs. He devoted much of his career to the amateur choral and festival movements in Britain, achieving popularity through works like his slow waltz 'Dusk.' Despite privileged beginnings, Gibbs faced childhood hardships, including the loss of his mother. He demonstrated early musical talent, but initially pursued education to prepare for business management. Later, significant encounters, including a friendship with poet Walter de la Mare and encouragement from conductor Adrian Boult, steered him towards music. Studying under notable figures, he began his prolific composing career, also teaching at the Royal College of Music and founding the Danbury Choral Society.
