Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714 – 1788), second surviving son of J.S. Bach and Maria Barbara Bach, was a German composer who played a key role in the development of the Classical style. A harpsichordist, C.P.E. Bach composed in a transitional period between Baroque and Classical, substantially influencing the music of his time. Known for his 'sensitive style,' he served Frederick the Great in Berlin and later succeeded Telemann as Kapellmeister in Hamburg.
