Carl August Nielsen (9 June 1865 – 3 October 1931) was a prominent Danish composer, conductor, and violinist. Raised on the island of Funen by musically gifted parents, Nielsen showed early talent and attended the Royal Danish Academy of Music. By 23, Nielsen had his Suite for Strings premiered and later joined the Royal Danish Orchestra. His works, especially his six symphonies, the Wind Quintet, and concertos, received international acclaim despite personal and career challenges, including a turbulent marriage. Today, his music is integral to Danish national heritage, with his opera 'Maskarade' being particularly celebrated.
