American Traditional

American Traditional, often referred to as American folk music, includes a vast array of genres such as bluegrass, gospel, old time music, jug bands, Appalachian folk, blues, Cajun and Native American music. It embodies the musical traditions brought by early settlers from the British Isles, Mainland Europe, and Africa, modifying and growing within the American context to an extent that it represents something new and distinctly American. Such music is recognized for being passed down within families or folk groups, often serving as the roots for later American music developments, including rock and roll, rhythm and blues, and jazz.
