Adolphe Charles Adam was a French composer, teacher, and music critic. Known for his theatre music, he is remembered for ballets such as Giselle (1841) and Le corsaire (1856), operas like Le postillon de Lonjumeau (1836), Si j'étais roi (1852), and the Christmas carol "Minuit, chrétiens!" ("O Holy Night", 1844). He defied his father's wish against a musical career, finding success in operas and ballets until losing his fortune in 1848 attempting to open a new opera house. He rebounded, engaging in journalism, teaching, and becoming a Paris Conservatoire professor【27†source】.
