Jacques Chailley was a prominent French musicologist and composer. Born to musician parents, he was a boarder at the Fontgombault Abbey where he honed his musical skills. He studied under renowned teachers including Nadia Boulanger, and his musicological work focused on Medieval music, musical theory, and languages. A member of the French Resistance and an influential post-war musical figure, he opposed atonality and serialism, leading to a career filled with teaching, composing, and scholarly works.
