Alexander von Zemlinsky (14 October 1871 – 15 March 1942) was an Austrian composer, conductor, and teacher. He was born and raised in a culturally diverse Jewish family in Vienna. Despite early setbacks, he won the support of Johannes Brahms and rose to prominence with the opera 'Es war einmal'. Zemlinsky mentored and befriended Arnold Schoenberg, becoming his only formal music teacher. His music, although post-Romantic in style, later incorporated modernist elements.
